If you have PIPE-FLO version 2007 or above, refer to Knowledge Base Article 181.

PIPE-FLO products version 7 thru version 2005 will automatically read project files from earlier versions, however some additional conversion may be required for project files from version 6 and earlier. This article describes the conversion methods available.

PIPE-FLO products version 7 thru version 2005 will automatically read project files from earlier versions, but cannot save files in older formats. Once a file has been opened in a newer version and saved again, it can no longer be read by old PIPE-FLO versions.

PIPE-FLO 2005 products will read project files from program versions 2004, 8, 7.1, and 7. Older file versions may require additional conversion to get them to a version that can be read by more current software. This means installing additional software modules to aid in the conversions process.

Remember, once a file has been saved by a newer software version, it can no longer be read by older software. If you have a piping system that needs to be used in multiple software versions, please be certain to make a copy of the file before updating it.

The table below describes the steps necessary for importing systems files of various versions into the current software.

Importing from Version:
2004 or 8 Simply open your file with the newer PIPE-FLO. It will be automatically converted. If you choose to save the file with the newer PIPE-FLO, it will no longer be accessible from older software versions.
7.1 or 7
  1. Open the file with the newer PIPE-FLO.

  2. Please Note:
    a. Pumps with manually entered curve data will be imported as process fluid curves.

    b. If a control valve has valve data which uses a different size unit than its inlet pipeline, the valve data will be removed (v. 7.1 systems only).

    c. The pipe tables shipped with PIPE-FLO have been changed to more use more descriptive names. When PIPE-FLO is installed, the user has the option of installing the newer tables and deleting the old ones. If a user opens a system that references an older table which has been deleted, PIPE-FLO automatically uses the new table.

  3. Pumps with manually entered curve data will be imported as process fluid curves.
  4. If a control valve has valve data which uses a different size unit than its inlet pipeline, the valve data will be removed (v. 7.1 systems only).
  6. Save the file.
  7. Open the file in the newer PIPE-FLO.
6
  1. You may wish to check the list of modifications made to version 6 files by newer versions.
  2. If you do not have version 6 installed, you need to install File Conversion software in order to open version 6 files.

Download file conversion software attachment below (V6_Files.zip).

Unzip the contents of the download into the path where your current PIPE-FLO is installed.

    Proceed to step 4.

  3. If you do have version 6 installed on your computer, you can open it up once more in version 6 to make the following adjustments prior to upgrading it.

If there are multiple lineups, set the active lineup to the one you'd like to be your design case. Later versions of PIPE-FLO will only import this active lineup.

Remove any Pump Controls (PCs) in the system. These controls are no longer supported. When a version 6 file is opened, pumps with PCs are removed from the system and placed on the FLO-Sheet below the system drawing.

  4. If your system uses specialty valve or pipe tables, you should create new editions of these tables using the latest edition of PIPE-FLO.
  5. If you created your own version 6 fluid tables, you should create new editions of the tables using the latest version of PIPE-FLO.
  6. Open the file with the newer PIPE-FLO.
  7. Save the file.
  8. Open the file in the newer PIPE-FLO.

Important: Even if you do not need to make adjustments to your version 6 file before updating the system file, you must install either version 6 PIPE-FLO or the File Conversion software (see #2 above) to be able to read your version 6 files.
5 Version 5 of PIPE-FLO introduced the pipe drawing as an optional program feature. However, in later versions the drawing became an integral part of the software and was thus required. Only systems with a completed drawing may be imported into version 6.

Unless a system is very large or has a drawing that is nearly completed, it may be faster to build a new system from scratch in the latest PIPE-FLO version than to create the drawing in version 5 and run through a series of incremental upgrades.

  1. Make sure that the system file has a completed drawing. If it does not, it must be completed before upgrading.
  2. If version 6 is not installed, download the attachment below (v6_setup.zip). Before runing the installation for version 6, see Running Multiple Versions of PIPE-FLO below.
  3. Open the file in version 6.
  4. Save the file.
  5. Follow the directions listed above for the new file.
4
  1. Open the file in version 5.
  2. Using version 5, create a system drawing for your system. (Version 4 did not have system drawings.)
  3. Save the file.
  4. Follow the directions listed above for the new file.

Other than for very large systems, it may be faster to recreate the system using the latest software version, rather than stepping through the incremental upgrade process.

Running Multiple Versions of PIPE-FLO

Installation

By default, all versions of the same PIPE-FLO application install to the same directory, overwriting each other. This prevents mulitple unused software versions from cluttering your system. Users that wish to run multiple versions of the software, including those doing temporary software installation for file updating, should install each version to a different directory.

Licenses

In most cases, old PIPE-FLO versions will run using the hardware keys or network licenses from newer applications. This means that you do not need to maintain multiple version of licensing hardware/software. However, if you only have one license, you will not be able to run both an old version and the new version simultaneously. You'll need to close one and then open the other.

In some cases, old software may use radically different licensing mechanisms than new software. In such cases it may be necessary to have a license for each. If you are having trouble running older software, you may contact technical support for advice. However, support for software versions more than three revisions out of date is not guaranteed.
