Changing Fluid Properties between Lineups

Within lineups, you can change the type or physical properties of the fluids running through your system.  This step-by-step article discusses how to set up your system to support this as well as how to change fluids per lineup.

When you initially create your system, one of the first things you will set up is Fluid Zones.  This is done in the System/Settings dialogue box.  If you are planning on changing the fluid properties in your system between lineups, it is good to think of these Fluid Zones as areas of your system which will contain the same type of fluid (as opposed to what fluid is actually going into the zone for any particular lineup).  For example, in the system shown in the downloadable files attached at the bottom of this article, both the pipelines from the Ethylene Glycol 90% tank and the Make Up Water Tank both will contain 90% Ethylene glycol solution at 60F or water at 60F respectively.  However, these two fluids will mix in the Storage Tank creating a more diluted Ethylene glycol Mixture which can vary from a 50% Ethylene glycol mix to an 80% mix (all at 60F).  Occasionally, the line will also be flushed with water at 90F in order to clean the lines.  It is this reason that the Fluid Zone for all the lines in the main process section of the system is simply named "Ethylene glycol Mixture".

Once the basic Design Case system is designed, lineups can now be created for each of the different operational conditions in the system.  Specifically, lineups for the different Ethylene Glycol mixtures can be created by:

  1. Select System/Lineups
  2. Select New and name the first lineup 50% Mixture.
  3. Repeat for a 60,70, and 80% Mixture lineups.
  4. Create a "System Flush" lineup.
  5. Once the lineups have been created, select OK.

Now the lineups are all created. However, the fluid in each system is still set as the Design Case fluid.  We can now go into our "Ethylene glycol Mixture" fluid zone and define the different fluids in this zone for each lineup.  We do this by:

  1. Open the Fluid Zone definition box by selecting System/Settings, click on the Fluids tab, then hit the "Add or Edit Fluid Zones" button.
  2. We want to define the Ethylene glycol Mixture so select that from the list of Fluid Zones.
  3. Now go to the lower left of the dialog box where the Lineups are defined.  By scrolling up or down in this box, you will see all the lineups you have just created.  Select the 50% Mixture lineup.
  4. We can now define the fluid in the "Ethylene glycol Mixture" zone for the "50% Mixture" lineup by selecting "50% Ethylene glycol" from the Installed fluid tables list.  Since we want this to remain at 60F, leave the temperature and pressure as is.
  5. Next, select the 60% Mixture from the Lineups box.  Define the fluid for this lineup as "60% Ethylene glycol".
  6. Repeat this for the 70 & 80% Ethylene glycol mixture lineups.
  7. Now we will define the fluid in the "System Flush" lineup by selecting that from the Lineup list.  Select Water from the Installed fluid tables and change the temperature to 90F.
  8. Scroll through the lineups to verify that the fluid is defined in the "Ethylene glycol Mixture" zone appropriately for each lineup.  Then select OK and OK again to return to the Flo-Sheet.  You will now see as you select the various lineups, the total head calculated for the Supply Pump will change based on what lineup is analyzed.

NOTE: The fluid zone name does not change between the lineups, but the fluid table and fluid properties used for the calculations will change based on the lineup settings.
